Message From the Principal |
| Dear Parents, I am delighted to welcome you to another exciting and productive year at C.D. Hylton Senior High School! I hope that your family enjoyed a great summer together. I am especially delighted to welcome our new staff, freshmen/new students, and their parents to our “Hylton High School family.” Our school’s theme is “We Are Family—Working Together for Total Success.” Our theme emphasizes that each family member, staff, students, parents, business partners,c is unique, valued, and contributes to the total effectiveness and success of C.D. Hylton High School. A major component of our theme is “Challenged to Excellence—Raising the Standards.” This emphasizes our commitment to strive for personal wellness as well as school-wide growth and development. I am honored to share that, again this year, even with the increased criteria and guidelines, Hylton High School has achieved fully accredited status and also achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). This is an example of the hard work, dedication, and collaborative efforts of our entire school family. Additionally, being recognized again by Newsweek magazine in the top 5% of the “Top 1,000 High Schools in the Nation” supports our tradition of excellence and continuous improvement. During the summer, the Leadership Team has been busily preparing for the 2009-10 school year. We are confident that you will share our excitement regarding all of the projects that have taken place to enhance instruction and to beautify our school. A foyer, provided for by Prince William County Schools, has been added as a major renovation project for the main entrance of our school. The foyer includes a special enclosed office for our front security area. This is an additional measure to provide for the safety and security of our staff and students. Additionally, the new foyer assists with energy conservation and adds to the attractiveness and beauty of our school’s main entrance. We received funding for a grant written for new technology equipment and incentives for continuous student academic and attendance improvements. The grant provides an additional 30 projector mounts and 18 digital projectors. This will provide every classroom at Hylton High School with a ceiling-mounted digital projector. The grant also provides five additional SmartBoards for classrooms. This new technology equipment will be extremely beneficial to the instructional needs of staff and students. Again this year, the focus for students is high expectations for academic achievement, attendance, and for appropriate behavior. We have GREAT students at Hylton High School. We encourage them to adhere to our expectations for academic excellence in an environment that is conducive to learning and promotes a positive and collaborative school culture. Please encourage your child to take advantage of the many opportunities and resources available to them at our school. I am, indeed, appreciative of my committed and dedicated staff, and my wonderful and supportive parents and business partners. We would like to thank the PTSO and our parent booster clubs for all of their assistance and continued support of our efforts. I strongly encourage all parents to actively participate in their child’s education, to volunteer and participate in our various booster clubs/programs/activities, and to become a member of the PTSO. I encourage you to visit our school’s web site and to check our SchoolFusion web page at http://cdhylton.com and utilize Edulink for updated information about your child’s academic progress and attendance. I am confident that together we will prepare and equip our students with the skills needed to experience academic success as well as to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. The team and family effort that we share continues to make a positive difference in the success of C.D. Hylton Senior High School. I am always available for you and look forward to another great year! Carolyn M. Custard Principal |
