MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Automotive Technology Program is to assist the student in acquireing the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to be a successful entry level worker in the field of Auto Technology and/or continue their education in a related occupational field.
COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Automotive Technology Program includes three courses: Introduction to Automotive Technology, Auto Technology I, and Auto Technology II. Students may begin the first course in this series in their sophomore year. Juniors and seniors who can balance ther responsibilites of work and school are encouraged to work in the industry.

Introduction to Auto Tech is a one-credit course that will teach students the basics of shop safety and procedures, atuomotive care and automotive maintenance. The following topics will be covered: careers, hand tools, shop safety (floor jacks and jack stands), measuring, fasterners and gaskets, automotive math, service manuals and abbreviations, maintenance and fluid services (fluid checks and changes, belts and hoses), tires and wheels (balancing and changeing), brake fundamentals and engin fundamentals.

Auto Tech I  is a two-credit course available to students who successfully complete Introduction to Auto Tech, through an application process. During this course students will gain additional knowledge on brake fundamentals and they will learn diagnosis and repair of brake systems to include ABS, as well as engine theory, diagnosis, minor repairs and support systems of the automobiles. The following topics will be covered: power tools and lifts, testing and repair, battery theory, testing and service, fuel system theory, and fundamentals, testing and repair of engines, cooling systems, lubrication systems, starting systems, and charging systems.

Auto Tech II is a two-credit course available to students who successfully complete Auto Tech I. This third level course will provide students with a more in-depth studey of previous sections including and on the job auto mechanic experience. Students will study engine performance and major repairs as well as clutches, drive trains, and wheel alignments.

Hylton High School Auto Technology Program has met requirements of NATEF certification. Students will be prepared for ASE certification exams in five areas: Steering Stystems Diagnosis and Repair, Engine Repair, Engine Performance, Electrical/Electronic Systems and Brakes.
ADMISSIONS

Admission is by application. Applications are available in the Guidance Department. Application deadline is March 15th.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • To emphasize quality work, interest, pride, and enthusiasm in the context of real workplace responsibilities
  • To increase student experiences in problem-solving, deductive reasoning, judgement, and decision-making skills within a team environment
  • To practice time management, planning, and organizational skills in the context of real workplace responsibilities
  • To demonstrate knowledge of automotive technology safety in the context of real workplace responsibilities
  • To work cooperatively with team members to complete assigned tasks in teh context of real workplace responsibilities
  • To make a contribution to the employment needs of the community by invreasing the supply of qualified Automotive Technology specialists
ADVISORY COMMITTEE

A group of area automotive business owners and managers meet regularly with educational staff to provide regular input for curriculum revsions and opportunities for student employment.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Most automotive mechanics work for car dealers, independent repair shops, or gasoline service stations. Over one-fifth are self-employed. The increasingly complex automotive technologies will require individuals seeking entry into this field to complete a formal program of studies. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs as an automotive service professional will be plentiful for persons who finish a formal training program.

According to the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), today's automotive technician must have

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Above average mechanical aptitude
  • Good reasoning ability
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Manual dexterity
